The days crawled by. Fiona tried not to look at her phone. Tried not to think about the fact that it had been one, two, now three days and she hadn’t heard a word from Grayston.

And then it was Saturday. Fiona had gone straight home after work Friday to avoid letting Grayston see she had no social life. In reality, she’d turned friends down because a loud, crowded bar just wasn’t her thing and that was where they were meeting. She usually just joined in when they planned a more introvert-friendly outing, like a girls’ night at the movies or tacos at a not-so-crowded Mexican restaurant.

But she couldn’t put it off any longer. Her dad’s place was going on the market in a week, which meant she had to get anything she wanted to keep out of there. Her plan was to show up with the boxes she’d tossed in her trunk, load up everything, and go through it all in the safety of her own home.

It would solve multiple problems. She wouldn’t have to worry about falling asleep in her father’s condo and waking up minutes before she was due at work. She could go through the box while she was comfortable in her own living room, watching documentaries and movies.

But mostly, she’d avoid the adrenaline rush that came every time she pulled into the parking garage.

It was that very adrenaline rush that distracted her now as she prepared to turn into her dad’s parking space. Grayston’s main parking spot was empty. She knew he had at least one other vehicle somewhere else. So his space being empty had to mean he wasn’t home.

She should feel relieved. Instead, her heart sank a little. It was very possible she’d never see him again.

After parking, Fiona climbed out and retrieved the boxes from her trunk. She was standing there, staring blankly into the empty trunk, when she heard the subtle whoosh of a car approaching.

Turning her head slightly, Fiona searched the area using her peripheral vision. She told herself it was silly to think the sound might belong to one of Grayston’s vehicles, but it wasn’t like her common sense was running things right now.

She froze. Yep. It was Grayston. There was no denying it. Fiona would know that convertible sports car anywhere after the day trip she’d taken with him. What did she do now?

His car pulled into the parking spot and stopped. She could just close her trunk and head back inside. Standing here would make it look like she was deliberately trying to see him.

As she closed the trunk, Fiona heard the door of his car close. She was already turning to head toward the elevator, but it would be rude not to say hi, wouldn’t it?

Squeezing her eyes closed, Fiona turned, tucking the boxes under her arms. She just had to look natural. Just going to pack up some final things like she’d do even if she wasn’t irresistibly attracted to a guy who lived in the same building.
